Clean the text

Cleaning keeps everything else exactly as it is

Paste text to see each character's code point, name and bytes. Zero-width spaces, hidden direction marks, unusual spaces and letters from other alphabets that only look Latin are highlighted, and you can clean them out. It is free and runs in your browser.

How to inspect text, step by step

  1. Paste your text into the Text to inspect box.
  2. Look for characters outlined in red. They are flagged as invisible or suspicious.
  3. Pick any character to see its code point, name and bytes.
  4. Under Clean the text, choose what to fix: Remove invisible characters, Normal spaces only, Straight quotes and dashes, or Replace lookalike letters.
  5. Press Clean and copy.

Why invisible characters matter

Zero-width spaces and joiners break search, passwords, code and spreadsheet formulas without showing up on screen. Text copied from web pages, chat apps, PDFs and AI tools often carries them. Direction marks can make code read differently from how it runs, a trick known as Trojan Source.

Lookalike letters

Some Cyrillic and Greek letters look exactly like Latin ones, so a word such as pаypal can be spelled with a Cyrillic а. Phishing links and spoofed usernames use this. Text that mixes alphabets in one word is flagged.

Bytes and encodings

Each character shows its UTF-8 and UTF-16 bytes, plus the HTML and JavaScript escapes, so you can track down encoding bugs and copy exact escapes into code.

Common problems it solves

  • A password or a login that fails even though it looks right.
  • A spreadsheet formula or a search that refuses to match.
  • A line of code that has a hidden character in it.
  • A username or link that looks right but uses a lookalike letter.
  • A document with spaces that will not collapse or line up.

Who uses it

Developers debugging text, editors and writers cleaning pasted content, support teams checking a strange username, and anyone curious about what is hiding in a piece of text. For general clean-up like line breaks, use the text cleaner.

Privacy

The text is inspected in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
