Paste an article, your notes or an essay draft and hear it read aloud, with each word highlighted as it is spoken. It uses the voices already on your device, so it works instantly and your text stays private. It is free.
How to listen to text, step by step
- Paste your text into the Text to read box, or press Try an example.
- Choose a Voice. The list shows what your device provides.
- Set the Speed (0.75, 1, 1.25 or 1.5 times) and the Pitch.
- Press Read aloud. Press Stop to end it.
Why listen
Hearing your own writing read back is one of the best ways to catch clumsy sentences and missing words. Listening is also easier on tired eyes, helps with dyslexia, and lets you get through long articles while you do something else.
Voices and languages
The voice list shows what your device and browser provide, often including dozens of languages and accents. Edge and Chrome offer the most natural ones. Pick one that matches the language of your text for the best result.
Tips for the best sound
- Choose a voice in the same language as the text.
- Slow the speed down for complicated material and speed it up for familiar text.
- Add commas and full stops where you want pauses.
- Spell out abbreviations if they are read oddly.
- Read your work in short sections to find mistakes more easily.
Who uses it
Students proofreading essays, writers checking the rhythm of a draft, people who prefer to listen to long articles, language learners hearing how words sound, and anyone with a reading difficulty. To make notes first, try Write desk.
Privacy
The reading is done by your device's built-in speech engine. This page does not upload your text anywhere.
Questions
Can I download the audio?
Browsers do not let web pages record their built-in voices, so the speech plays live. To keep a recording, use your device's own screen or audio recorder.
Why are there few voices on my device?
The list comes from your device and browser. Newer systems and browsers usually offer more.
Does it work offline?
Many built-in voices work without a connection, depending on your device.
