The checker runs on this device, so emails, essays and confidential documents are never sent to a server. Paste your writing, see the problems underlined and fix them with one click. It is free and private.
How to check your writing
- Choose your English variety: American, British, Canadian, Australian or Indian English.
- Paste or type into Your text, or press Try an example.
- Look at the underlined words and select one to see why it was marked.
- Accept the suggested fix, or ignore it. You can also add a word to your dictionary.
- When the text says Nice writing, use Copy text to take it away.
What it checks
Spelling, grammar, punctuation, repeated words, capitalisation, common confusions such as their and there, and wordy or unclear phrasing. Each suggestion explains the problem and offers a one-click fix.
Private by design
Most grammar checkers send everything you type to their servers. This one downloads its engine to your browser once, about 16 MB, and checks your writing right here. Nothing you type is uploaded, which makes it safe for work documents and personal messages.
Your dictionary
Names, brands and technical terms often look like spelling mistakes. Choose Add to dictionary and the word is accepted from then on. Your dictionary is saved in this browser.
Tips for better writing
- Pick the right English variety first, so colour and color, or centre and center, are judged correctly.
- Read each explanation before you accept a fix. A suggestion is not always right for your meaning.
- Check names, numbers and dates yourself. No checker can know them.
- Read your text aloud once more at the end. It catches what a program misses.
- Check long documents a section at a time.
Who uses it
Students polishing essays, job seekers checking a CV or a cover letter, small business owners proofing emails and web pages, and people writing in English as a second language. To check references as well, use the citation generator.
