Fill in the details yourself or paste a DOI or ISBN, build your reference list, and copy it with the italics in place. Make APA, MLA, Chicago and Harvard citations for websites, journal articles, books and videos, free and with no sign-up.
How to make a citation
- Choose the style: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago or Harvard.
- Pick the Source type: Website or web page, Journal article, Book or Video.
- Paste a DOI or ISBN and press Fill in, or type the Authors, Title, Date published and other details yourself.
- Read the citation and the matching in-text version, and use Copy citation.
- Press Start a new one to add the next source. Copy all copies the whole list, and Clear list empties it.
Citation styles
APA 7 is used in psychology, education and the social sciences. MLA 9 is common in literature and the humanities. Chicago author-date suits history and the sciences, and Harvard is widely used at universities in the UK and Australia. Check which style your teacher, school or journal asks for.
Fill in from a DOI or ISBN
Most journal articles have a DOI, and most books have an ISBN. Paste either one and the details are filled in from the Crossref and Open Library catalogues. That lookup is the only thing this page sends anywhere, and only when you press Fill in.
In-text citations
Under each citation you get the matching in-text citation, such as (Smith & Lee, 2021) in APA or (Smith and Lee 52) in MLA. Add the page number yourself when you quote directly.
Tips for accurate references
- Take details from the source itself, such as the title page or the article header, rather than a search result.
- For websites, record the date you accessed the page, since pages can change.
- Keep the same style throughout one piece of work.
- Check capitalisation and author order before you hand in the work.
- Send the finished list to your document with Send to Write, or paste it into your word processor.
Who uses it
School and university students writing essays, researchers preparing a bibliography, and bloggers or small businesses who cite their sources. To check your writing afterwards, use the grammar checker.

Questions
Are these citations correct?
They follow the current editions of each style for the common source types. Always check unusual sources against your style guide, and make sure the details you enter are complete.
Can I export to Word?
Yes. Press Copy all and paste into Word or Google Docs. The italics come along.
Do I need to look up the DOI myself?
Journal articles usually show the DOI near the title or in the citation details. Paste it as it appears.
What if a source has no author?
Leave the author blank and the title will lead, as most styles require.
