Make many at once

One value per line, using the format and style you picked. You’ll get a .zip of PNG files named after each value.

Runs in your browser

Check digits are worked out for you, and you can make a whole batch from a list. Make Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A and EAN-8 barcodes and download them as SVG, PNG or a ZIP, free and private in your browser.

How to make a barcode

  1. Pick the Format: Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A or EAN-8.
  2. Type or paste the Value. For retail formats, enter the digits and the last check digit is added for you.
  3. Under Style, choose the colour of the Bars and the Background. You can turn on Show the number or Transparent background.
  4. Check the preview, then press Download SVG or Download PNG.

For many barcodes at once, type one value per line in Values, one per line, then press Make all and Download .zip.

Which barcode should I use?

Code 128 holds any letters, numbers and symbols and is the usual choice for shipping labels, stock and asset tags. EAN-13 is the retail barcode used worldwide, and UPC-A is its US and Canadian form. EAN-8 is a short version for small packages.

Retail barcodes need a registered number

Shops and marketplaces expect EAN and UPC numbers issued to your company by GS1. This generator draws the barcode for any number correctly, but it can't issue official product numbers.

For things that stay inside your own business, such as shelves, tools, library books or event tickets, Code 128 with your own numbering works well and needs no registration.

Printing tips

Use the SVG for print, since it stays sharp at any size. Keep dark bars on a light background, leave the white margin around the code, and test a printout with your scanner or phone before printing a large batch.

  • Do not stretch a barcode out of proportion. Scale it evenly.
  • Keep the colours strongly contrasting. Black bars on white are the safest.
  • Avoid printing on glossy or curved surfaces if you can, since glare confuses scanners.
  • Make the code large enough for your scanner. Small labels need a short value or the EAN-8 format.

Common uses

Small shops labelling stock, makers adding codes to packaging, offices tracking equipment, and teachers or clubs numbering books and kit. To check that a printed code reads correctly, try the barcode scanner. For QR codes, there is also the bulk QR code generator.

Questions

What is a check digit?

It is the last digit of an EAN or UPC number, worked out from the other digits so scanners can catch typing mistakes. The generator adds it for you.

What values does Code 128 accept?

Ordinary letters, numbers and common symbols. Very unusual characters may not be supported.

Can I use these barcodes in a shop?

Only with numbers that belong to you. Shops and marketplaces expect EAN or UPC numbers issued through GS1.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The barcodes are drawn in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
