Choose the classic Latin filler or plain English that reads like real copy, add HTML tags if you're dropping it into a page, and copy it in one click. Make placeholder text for designs, mock-ups and templates. It is free and runs in your browser.

How to generate placeholder text

  1. Choose what to make: Paragraphs, Sentences, Words or List items.
  2. Set the Amount with How many.
  3. Pick the Style: Classic Lorem Ipsum (Latin) or Plain English placeholder.
  4. Switch on HTML tags if you want paragraph or list markup.
  5. Read the Placeholder text, press New text for another version, and press Copy.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

It's scrambled Latin, adapted from a passage of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum written in 45 BC. Typesetters have used it since the 1500s because it has a natural mix of short and long words, so a layout looks filled in without anyone stopping to read the words.

When to use plain English instead

Latin filler is great for testing type and spacing, but it can hide problems. English words are a little longer on average and break across lines differently, and clients reviewing a mock-up sometimes get stuck on the Latin. The plain English style gives you readable, neutral sentences that won't be mistaken for final copy.

Tips for designers and developers

Use list items to fill menus, feature lists and navigation. Turn on HTML tags to paste straight into a template as <p> or <ul> blocks. And swap the placeholder for real words as early as you can, since real content almost always changes the design.

Good places to use it

  • Testing how a heading, paragraph and button look together on a page layout.
  • Filling a template so a client can judge the design without waiting for the writing.
  • Checking how a long paragraph wraps on a phone.
  • Practising layout and typography in a class project.

To tidy up your page code afterwards, try the code formatter. To check your real text, use the grammar checker.

Questions

Is Lorem Ipsum real Latin?

It is based on a real passage, but the words are rearranged and cut, so it does not make sense as a text.

Can I use it in a final design?

Placeholder text is for drafts. Replace it with real content before publishing.

Is anything sent online?

No. The text is made in your browser.
