All processing happens on your device. Your recording is not uploaded. Take a recording with background noise or uneven volume and make it clear and consistent: reduce noise, even out the loudness and trim the silence, then save it as MP3 or WAV. It is free and private.

How to clean up a recording

  1. Press Choose a recording and pick an audio or video file, or press Try an example.
  2. Turn on the steps you want under Steps: Reduce background noise, Even out loudness and Trim silence.
  3. Set the Strength of the noise reduction, and choose a loudness target: Podcast, Social video or Broadcast.
  4. For trimming, pick Start and end, or Long pauses too.
  5. Choose the Format, MP3 or WAV, and press Clean up.
  6. Compare Before and After, then press Download.

Choose another lets you start again with a different file.

What each step does

Noise reduction listens to the quietest parts of the recording to learn what the background sounds like, then turns that sound down everywhere while leaving louder sounds such as speech alone. Loudness evening measures the recording the way streaming services and podcast apps do, in LUFS, and brings it to the level you choose, with a limiter that stops peaks from clipping. Trimming removes silence at the start and end, and can shorten long pauses in the middle.

Supported files

You can open MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, Opus and FLAC audio, and the soundtrack of MP4, MOV and WebM video. Only the sound is processed.

Tips for a clean result

  • Record a second or two of silence at the start. That is the sample the noise reduction learns from.
  • Start with a low or medium Strength. Very strong settings can make voices sound thin or watery.
  • Use the Before and After players to check the difference with headphones.
  • Keep the original file. Save the cleaned version under a new name.
  • Record closer to the microphone and away from fans and windows. Clean-up helps, but a good recording helps more.

Common uses

Podcasters and students recording lectures or interviews, freelancers delivering voice-overs, and small businesses tidying up phone-recorded voice messages or video soundtracks. To cut or join clips afterwards, use the audio editor.

Questions

Which noises can it remove?

Steady sounds: hiss, computer fans, air conditioning, electrical hum and room tone. Sudden sounds such as a door, a dog or traffic going past change too quickly to learn and stay in. For the best result, leave a second or two of silence at the start of a recording.

Which loudness should I pick?

Podcast at -16 LUFS suits podcast apps. Social video at -14 LUFS matches the level used by the big video and social platforms. Broadcast at -23 LUFS is the European TV and radio standard.

Will it change the length?

Only if you trim silence. The facts under the result show how many seconds were removed. Turn trimming off to keep the timing, for example when the audio has to line up with a video.

MP3 or WAV?

MP3 at 192 kbps is small and plays everywhere. WAV is uncompressed, best when you will edit the audio again.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. Your browser does all the work, so interviews and private voice notes stay on your device.
