Remove the sound from a video completely, or make it quieter or louder. The picture stays exactly as it was. It is free and private: the video never leaves this device.
How to mute a video, step by step
- Press Choose a video, or drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file on the page.
- Under Sound, choose Remove the sound, or Change the volume and set a level from 0% to 300%.
- Press Remove sound and wait for it to finish.
- Press Download.
Fast, with no loss of quality
Removing the sound does not touch the picture. The video stream is copied into a new file of the same type, so it takes seconds even for long recordings and looks exactly like the original. The new file is usually a little smaller too, because the sound is gone.
Quieter or louder
Choose Change the volume to keep the sound but adjust it, for example to tone down a loud background track before adding a voice-over, or to lift a quiet recording. 100% keeps the original level, and values above that make quiet recordings louder. Only the sound is processed; the picture is still copied as it is. If you lift the volume a lot, the loudest moments are held at the limit so they do not distort.
Why mute a video?
- Remove copyrighted music before posting your own clip.
- Take out background noise, wind or a conversation you would rather not share.
- Prepare a clip to add a voice-over or new music in the video editor.
- Make a silent video for a screen, a shop display or a website background.
Private by design
The video is opened and saved by your own browser, using its built-in video engine. Nothing is uploaded, so personal videos, client work and recordings of children stay on this device. Once the page has loaded, it works without an internet connection.
Questions
Does muting reduce the video quality?
No. When you remove the sound, the picture is copied without being re-encoded.
Can I keep only the sound instead?
Yes. The video and audio tool can save the audio from a video.
Why is my file a different size afterwards?
The sound is gone, so the new file is usually a little smaller.
Which video types can I use?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV.
