Drop in a PDF that shows an error, opens blank or was cut short by a failed download. The file is rebuilt on this device, every page is checked, and you see a plain list of what was wrong and what was fixed. It is free, and your file never leaves this device.

How to repair a PDF, step by step

  1. Drop the damaged PDF on the page or press Choose a damaged PDF.
  2. Decide whether pages that still fail should be rebuilt as images. This keeps how a broken page looks instead of losing it, but the text on those pages will not be selectable.
  3. Read the report of what was found and fixed.
  4. Press Download repaired PDF.

What can be repaired

Most damaged PDFs are not ruined, just confusing for PDF readers. A broken index that says where each part of the file starts, stray bytes added by an email program, missing end markers and downloads that stopped early are all fixed by rebuilding the file from the pieces that are still there. Pages that are complete come back exactly as they were, with sharp, selectable text.

When a page cannot be saved

If part of a page is missing from the file, nothing can bring that part back. When a page still will not draw after the rebuild, the tool can keep a picture of whatever is readable instead of dropping the page. Each step is listed in the report, so you know which pages were rebuilt and how.

Why PDFs get damaged

  • A download or a transfer that stopped before the end.
  • An email or cloud program that changed the file on the way.
  • A computer or phone that shut down while saving.
  • An old tool that wrote the file incorrectly.

If repair does not work

Try downloading or copying the file again from its source, because the original may be fine. If the PDF needs a password, unlock it first with Unlock PDF. To make a fixed copy smaller, use PDF basics.

Privacy

The repair happens in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded, and the repaired copy is saved straight to your device.

Questions

Will it change my original file?

No. You download a new repaired copy.

Can it recover a PDF that is mostly missing?

It recovers what is still in the file. Parts that are gone cannot be brought back.

Why is my text no longer selectable on some pages?

Those pages were rebuilt as images to keep how they look. Turn that option off if you prefer to lose them rather than keep them as pictures.

Where to next

Carry on with what you just made, still on your device.
