Convert to

The text is extracted on this device in seconds.

Turn a PDF into an editable Word document or plain text. Paragraphs and headings are rebuilt so the text is ready to edit, and the whole conversion happens on this device. It is free, and your files are never uploaded.

How to convert a PDF to Word, step by step

  1. Drop your PDF files on the page or press Choose PDF files. You can add several at once.
  2. Choose the output: Word document (headings and paragraphs) or Plain text (just the words).
  3. Decide whether to start a New page for each PDF page, which keeps the original page breaks.
  4. Press Convert to Word, then download each file.

What this tool does

This tool takes the text out of a PDF and rebuilds it as an editable document. Lines are joined back into paragraphs, larger text becomes headings, and each page can start on a new page, so the result is easy to edit in Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.

Word or plain text

Choose Word document for a .docx file with proper headings and paragraphs. Choose Plain text when you only need the words, for example to paste into another app, search through, or feed into a script.

What is kept

The text, its reading order, paragraphs and headings are kept. Pictures, tables and exact page layout are not recreated, because a PDF stores them as positioned shapes rather than as an editable structure. For documents where the layout matters most, keep the PDF and copy the text you need from here.

Tips for better results

  • Use a PDF that was made from a document, such as a report or an article, rather than a scan or a photo.
  • Single-column documents convert most cleanly. Multi-column layouts may need a tidy-up in Word.
  • Pick Plain text if you plan to restyle everything anyway.
  • Read the result through once to check headings and line breaks.

Who uses it

Students reuse quotes and notes from readings, office teams update an old report or policy, and freelancers edit a client's document that only came as a PDF. For tables, use PDF to Excel, and to change text directly inside a PDF, use edit PDF.

Scanned PDFs

A scanned PDF is a picture of each page, so it contains no real text to convert. If that is the case, the tool tells you, and our scanned PDF to text tool can read the words from the page images instead.

Privacy

Your files never leave this device. The PDF is opened by your browser, the document is built in its memory, and the download comes straight from there. Nothing is uploaded.

Questions

Is there a page limit?

No set limit. Long documents of several hundred pages convert in seconds on most computers.

Can it open password-protected PDFs?

Not PDFs that need a password to open. PDFs that open freely but restrict editing usually convert fine.

Will the formatting match the PDF exactly?

No. The text, headings and paragraphs come through, but exact layout, pictures and tables are not recreated.

Where to next
