Add a photo, choose how soft the background should be and download the result. Nothing is uploaded. Give any photo the soft, blurred backdrop of a portrait lens, free and private.
How to blur a background
- Press Choose a photo and pick an image.
- Wait a moment while the subject is found.
- Adjust the Strength of the Blur, and the Edge softness around the subject.
- Choose Save as JPG or PNG.
- Press Download. Choose another lets you start with a new photo.
How it works
A segmentation model finds the main subject of the photo, such as a person, a pet or a product. Everything else is blurred, while the subject is kept exactly as it was. The blur is worked out so the subject's colours do not bleed into the background, which keeps the edges clean.
Tips
- Photos with one clear subject work best, such as portraits, product shots and pets.
- A strength around 10 to 20 looks like a real camera lens. Higher values make the background a soft wash of colour.
- Raise the edge softness if the outline of the subject looks too sharp.
- Use a sharp, well lit original. A blurry subject cannot be improved by blurring what is behind it.
- Look closely at the edges of hair and hands before you download.
Supported files
You can open PNG, JPG, WebP and BMP images. Save as JPG for a small file, or PNG to keep the best quality.
Common uses
- Profile photos and team pictures taken in a messy room.
- Product photos for a shop where the surroundings are distracting.
- Video call and presentation photos where you want attention on the person.
- Hiding street signs or other details behind your subject.
To remove the background altogether, use background remover. To hide faces rather than backgrounds, use blur faces.
Private by design
The AI runs inside your browser using your graphics card through WebGPU, which current Chrome, Edge and Safari support. Your photos are never sent to a server, and there are no credits, watermarks or sign-up.
Questions
Why is the first photo slow?
The browser needs to load the AI model once. After that it is kept in your browser and later photos are faster.
It blurred part of my subject. What can I do?
Raise the Edge softness, or try a photo where the subject stands out more clearly from the background.
Does the subject stay sharp?
Yes. Only the background is blurred, and the subject is kept as it was.
