Rewrite your text, with AI that stays on your device

Make an email more formal, a message friendlier or a paragraph shorter.

Optional. A few words of context help the tone.

Checking what this browser can do.

Tone and length options appear when your browser has a built-in writing model.

Meanwhile you can check grammar or check readability on your device.

Nothing rewritten yet Paste your text, choose the tone and length, then press Rewrite.

The rewriting is done by the AI built into your browser, on this device, so your words are never sent to a server. Paste a message, pick a tone and length, and get a fresh version you can copy. It is free and private, as long as your browser supports it.

How to rewrite text

  1. Paste your text into Text to rewrite.
  2. Choose a Tone: More formal, Keep, or More casual.
  3. Choose a Length: Shorter, Keep, or Longer.
  4. Optionally fill in What is it for? so the rewrite fits, for example a message to a landlord or a cover letter.
  5. Press Rewrite, then read the Rewritten text.
  6. Not quite right? Press Try another version, or use Copy text when you are happy.

How it works

Chrome is adding a small writing model that runs on your own computer, along with a Rewriter that can change the tone and length of text. When your browser has it, this page asks it to rewrite your text and shows the result. Nothing is sent to a server, and once the model is downloaded it works offline.

Which browsers can rewrite here

The built-in Rewriter is new and still rolling out, so many browsers do not have it yet, including most phones. When yours does not, this page says so plainly rather than sending your text to an online service. Rewriting needs a real language model, so there is no honest way to fake it.

Tips for better rewrites

  • Rewrite a paragraph or an email at a time rather than a whole document.
  • Say what the text is for, such as a message to your landlord or a cover letter.
  • Read the result before you send it. Check names, numbers and dates especially.
  • Try a few versions and combine the best sentences from each.
  • If the result loses your meaning, rewrite a smaller piece or keep the tone and change only the length.

Common uses

  • Making an email sound more professional, or a stiff message sound friendlier.
  • Trimming a long paragraph for a form with a word limit.
  • Smoothing out a rough draft of an essay introduction or a product description.

To check spelling and grammar afterwards, use the grammar checker.

Questions

Is my text uploaded?

No. The model runs on your device, and the page never sends your text anywhere.

Why does the page say my browser can't rewrite?

The built-in Rewriter is not available in every browser or on every device yet. Try a recent version of Chrome on a computer. The first use may also need a model download.

Will it change my meaning?

It can. Rewriting models sometimes drop or alter details, so always read the result against your original before using it.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once your browser has downloaded its model.

Where to next

Carry on with what you just made, still on your device.
