Format

JPG works everywhere, including forms and government sites. WebP keeps more detail at the same size.

Application forms and upload pages often say "max 50 KB" or "under 200 KB". Each photo is saved at the highest quality that fits, and it's only made smaller in pixels when quality alone can't get there. Free, private and done on your device.

How to compress an image to an exact size

  1. Press Choose photos and select one or more images.
  2. Under Keep each photo under, pick 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB, or choose Custom and enter your own Custom size.
  3. Pick the Format: JPG or WebP.
  4. Wait while each photo is processed, then download it, or use Download all (.zip) for the batch.
  5. Clear removes the photos so you can start again.

How the exact size is reached

Each photo is saved over and over at different quality levels, narrowing in on the best quality that still lands under your limit. Only if the lowest sensible quality is still too big is the photo scaled down, and then just enough to fit with the quality kept high.

Why it lands a little under

Some sites count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024. Files are kept under the limit by both counts, so a 50 KB target gives a file of at most 50,000 bytes and it will pass either way.

JPG or WebP?

Choose JPG when you're uploading to a form, a government site or anything older, since it's accepted everywhere. WebP keeps more detail at the same size and suits websites and modern apps. Transparent areas turn white in JPG. Either way, the hidden camera and location details are left out of the new file.

Tips for good results

  • Start from the original photo rather than one that has already been compressed several times.
  • Very small targets, like 20 KB, work best for simple pictures such as passport style photos and signatures.
  • If detail matters, choose a bigger limit if the form allows it.
  • Check the result by zooming in on faces and text before you upload it.
  • Need exact pixel dimensions as well? Crop or resize first in the image editor.

Common uses

Job and visa applications, school and university portals, government forms, ID and signature uploads, and marketplace listings with a file size limit. For changing file types, see the image converter.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. It is compressed in your browser and never leaves your device.

Will the picture look worse?

A little, if the limit is small. The tool always keeps the highest quality that fits, and only shrinks the pixels when it has to.

Does it remove location data?

Yes. The new file leaves out hidden camera and location details.

Can I compress many photos at once?

Yes. Add several and download them together as a ZIP.

Where to next

Carry on with what you just made, still on your device.
