How to use the calculator

  1. Under Your course, enter your current grade, the grade you want, and how much the final exam is worth.
  2. Read the score you need on the final.
  3. Open Every letter grade to see what each grade would take.

How it works

Your final grade is your current grade weighted by the part of the course already done, plus the final exam weighted by what it's worth. So the score you need is (goal − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

Example

With 82% so far, a goal of 85%, and a final worth 30%, you need (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 92% on the final.

If the number is over 100

The goal can't be reached with the final alone unless there's extra credit. Try a lower goal, or ask whether other work can still be added.

Tips

  • Find the weight of the final in your course outline. It is usually a percentage of the total.
  • Use your current grade as it stands now, including only the work that has been marked.
  • Try a few goals. Seeing what a B or a C takes can take the pressure off.
  • Use the result to plan your study time, and spend more on the topics the final covers most.

Who uses it

School, college and university students, and parents helping them plan. To keep track of marks across a whole term, use the gradebook.
