A gradebook that does the weighting for you

Set your categories and weights, add students and assignments, and type the scores. Totals and letter grades update as you go.

Add many students at oncePaste a list, one name per line

Your class stays in this browser. Names and grades are never uploaded. Keep student marks, set category weights and see each student's overall percentage and letter grade. It is free and private.

How to set up a gradebook

    1. Press Try an example class to see how it looks, or start a New class.
    2. Add students with Student name and Add student, or paste a list into One name per line and press Add these students.
    3. Under Categories and weights, press Add a category for things like homework, quizzes and exams, and set each weight.
    4. Under Assignments, press Add an assignment, choose its category and enter the points possible.
    5. Type each student's score in the grid.
    6. Under Grading, choose Letter grades (A+ to F, A to F, or No letters, percent only).
    7. Save as CSV, or make a Class report PDF.

    How the weighting works

Each category’s percentage is the points earned divided by the points possible for its assignments. The overall grade is the weighted average of those category percentages. If a category has no scores yet, it is left out and the other weights are scaled up, so early in the term a student with only homework scores is graded on homework alone. Weights do not have to add up to 100; they are used as proportions.

    Blank and excused scores

By default a blank score is treated as not graded yet and does not count. Turn on Count blank scores as zero once a deadline has passed and missing work should lower the grade. Type EX for excused work, such as an absence, and it is always left out.

    Importing and exporting

Save as CSV gives a spreadsheet with every score, each category percentage, the overall percentage and the letter grade. Import CSV reads a spreadsheet with student names in the first column and one column per assignment. Put the points possible in the header, such as Quiz 1 (20), and the category is guessed from the name.

    Keeping your gradebook safe

The gradebook is saved in this browser on this device. Clearing your browser data removes it, so save a CSV regularly as a backup, and keep student information on devices you trust.

    Tips

    • Set the category weights from your course outline before you enter scores.
    • Use EX for absences and approved extensions so marks stay fair.
    • Switch on Count blank scores as zero only after the deadline.
    • Make a class report PDF at the end of each term for your records.
    • Keep feedback ready with the comment bank.

    Who uses it

Teachers, tutors and coaches, and students who want to track their own marks in a course. Students can also work out the score needed on an exam with the final grade calculator.

    Questions

No. Names and grades stay in this browser.

Why do the weights not need to total 100?

They are used as proportions, so any set of numbers works.

Can I move my gradebook to another computer?

Save a CSV and use Import CSV on the other device.

    Where to next

Carry on with what you just made, still on your device.
