    Working

      Letter grades use a common US scale: A+ 97 and up, A 93, A− 90, B+ 87, B 83, B− 80, C+ 77, C 73, C− 70, D+ 67, D 63, D− 60, F below 60. Your school’s scale may differ.

How to calculate your weighted grade, step by step

      1. Choose Percent, or Points if you have points earned and points possible.
      2. Type each Category or assignment, its Grade and its Weight. Use Add a row for more. Leave a row empty to skip it.
      3. Read your Weighted average so far, the Weight entered and the Weight remaining.
      4. Under What do I need?, type your Target overall grade to see the average you need on what is left.

How a weighted grade is worked out

Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. With homework 92% worth 20%, quizzes 85% worth 20% and a midterm 78% worth 25%, that is (92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25) ÷ 65 = 84.46%. Dividing by the weight entered so far, rather than by 100, gives your average on the work that has been graded.

What you need on the rest

The weight still to come is 100% minus the weight entered. To finish on a target, you need (target × 100 − average × weight entered) ÷ weight remaining as your average on what is left. In the example, 35% of the weight remains, and finishing on 85% needs 86% on it. If the answer is over 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit; if it is 0% or less, you are already there.

      Percent or points

Switch to Points to type points earned and points possible for each row, such as 45 out of 50. Each row is turned into a percentage before it is weighted, so a 10-point quiz and a 200-point exam count only by their weights. Grades above 100% from extra credit are fine.

      Letter grades

      Tips for planning your grade

      • Copy the weights from your course outline exactly.
      • Enter only graded work, so the average shows where you stand.
      • Change the target to see what different outcomes need, such as 80% or 90%.
      • Check your result against your teacher's gradebook, because some courses drop the lowest score.

      Who uses it

High school and college students planning for a final exam, parents helping with homework, and teachers checking how a mark is built. If you only need the final exam score, try the final grade calculator, and for teachers, the gradebook.

      Questions

What if my weights do not add up to 100?

That is fine while the term is under way. The tool divides by the weight entered so far and shows the weight remaining.

      Can I include extra credit?

Yes. A grade above 100% is accepted.

What if the grade I need is over 100%?

The target is out of reach without extra credit.

      Where to next

Carry on with what you just made, still on your device.
