Every statistic for your numbers, at once

Paste or type a list of numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.

Statistics

Separate numbers with commas, spaces or new lines. Results update as you type.

Paste or type a list of numbers and get the mean, median, mode, quartiles, variance and standard deviation, with a box plot. Results update as you type. It is free, and everything runs in your browser.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Type or paste your numbers in the Your numbers box, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
  2. Read the results, which update as you type.
  3. Look at the box plot to see the spread of your data.
  4. Press Copy results to paste them into your notes.

Sample or population?

Use the sample standard deviation when your numbers are a sample drawn from a bigger group, which is the usual case in class and in research. Use the population figure when you have every value in the group. The sample version divides by n − 1 instead of n.

How the median and quartiles are found

The numbers are sorted, and the median is the middle value, or the average of the two middle values. Quartiles use linear interpolation between the closest ranks, the same method as Excel's QUARTILE.INC and most graphing calculators.

Mode

The mode is the value that appears most often. A list can have more than one mode, and if every value appears only once there is no mode.

What each statistic tells you

  • The mean is the average. It is pulled towards very large or very small values.
  • The median is the middle value and is not pulled by extreme values, so it suits skewed data such as incomes.
  • The variance and standard deviation measure how spread out the values are.
  • The quartiles and box plot show where the middle half of your data sits.

Who uses it

Students doing homework and lab reports, teachers checking class results, researchers summarising a small data set, and small business owners looking at weekly sales or response times. To see how far a single value is from the mean, use the z-score calculator. To weigh up grades, try the weighted grade calculator.

Questions

When should I use the sample standard deviation?

When your numbers are a sample from a larger group. If you have every value in the group, use the population figure.

What if my data has no mode?

If every value appears only once, there is no mode.

Can I paste numbers from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Copy a column of cells and paste it into the box.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The calculations run in your browser.
