Number every page of a PDF, add a line of text to the header or footer, or stamp a watermark like DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL across each page. The PDF is changed on this device and never uploaded. It is free.

How to add page numbers and watermarks, step by step

  1. Open a PDF by dropping it on the page or clicking to choose one. The first page shows your stamps as you change them.
  2. For page numbers, turn on Number the pages and pick the position and style.
  3. Set Start at, and use Skip first pages to leave a cover unnumbered.
  4. For a watermark, type the Text and choose its Look (Diagonal, Straight or Repeated) and Strength.
  5. Add a Header or Footer line if you want one, then press Download PDF.

Page numbers your way

Choose where the numbers go: bottom centre, bottom right, bottom left, top centre or top right. Choose how they read, from a plain 1 to 1 of 12, Page 1 or Page 1 of 12. Skip the cover or contents pages and start counting from any number, so the numbering matches your document.

Watermarks

Stamp DRAFT on work in progress, CONFIDENTIAL on private documents or COPY on a scanned original. Pick a single large diagonal mark, a straight one, or a repeated pattern that is hard to crop out. Light, Medium and Strong set how visible it is.

Headers and footers

Add a line of text at the top or bottom of every page, such as a company name, a case number or a date.

Tips

  • Use Light for a watermark on pages with a lot of text, so the words stay easy to read.
  • Use Repeated when the document is sensitive and you want the mark to be hard to remove.
  • Skip the first page of a report, then start at 1 on the page after the cover.
  • Combine page numbers with a footer, such as a document name, to keep long files organised.

Who uses it

Students number long essays and theses. Law and finance teams mark drafts and confidential papers. Small businesses add a company name to quotes, and teachers number worksheets. To put several pages on one sheet for printing, use PDF booklet.
