Pick a length, start typing the words below, and see your words per minute, your accuracy and the keys that slow you down. Every test uses a fresh mix of common English words. It runs in your browser, and it is free.

How to take the test, step by step

  1. Choose a length: 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds.
  2. Turn on Punctuation or Numbers for a harder test.
  3. Click or tap the text and start typing. The timer starts with your first key.
  4. When time is up, read your WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and the keys you missed most.
  5. Press Tab then Enter, or Try again, for a new test.

How the score works

Typing speed is counted in words per minute, where a word is any five characters, spaces included. That keeps short and long words fair. Your WPM counts only the characters that end up correct, so mistakes you leave in lower it. Raw WPM counts every key you pressed, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct the first time, so fixing a typo with backspace still counts the original slip.

Which keys slow you down

At the end you see the keys you mistyped most often, and the keys where you paused longest before pressing them compared with your average. Practising those few keys, slowly and accurately, is usually the quickest way to get faster.

Tips for a better result

Look at the screen, not your hands, and keep a steady rhythm rather than bursts. Accuracy first: speed follows once your fingers find the keys without thinking. Turn on punctuation and numbers when the plain words feel easy. Short, regular practice sessions move the number up over time.

What is a good typing speed?

Many adults type at 35 to 45 words per minute. Office roles often look for 50 to 60, and fast typists reach 80 or more. Accuracy matters as much as speed, because correcting mistakes takes time. A steady 95% or better is a sound aim.

On a phone

Tap the text to bring up your keyboard. Autocorrect and word suggestions are switched off for the test area, but some keyboards still insert words on their own, which can count as errors.

Who uses it

Students building keyboard skills, job seekers who need a typing score for an application, teachers running a class activity, and anyone who wants to see how they improve over time. Your personal best is kept in this browser.

Private by design

The test runs on this page. Your personal best is kept only in this browser's storage, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Questions

What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?

Raw WPM counts every key pressed. WPM counts only the characters that end up correct.

Does backspace count against me?

The original mistake still counts against accuracy, but fixing it keeps your WPM higher.

How often should I practise?

Short daily sessions of five to ten minutes work better than one long session a week.
