No summary yet Paste your text, pick a style, then press Summarize. Turn on Only use sentences from my text to keep the original wording.

It runs in your browser, using its built-in AI when available.

The summary is made on this device, by your browser's built-in AI when it has one, so nothing is uploaded. Paste an article, report or set of notes and get key points, a short summary or a headline. It is free and private.

How to summarize text

  1. Paste your text into Text to summarize, or press Try a sample.
  2. Choose the type: Key points, Short summary or Headline.
  3. Choose the length: Short, Medium or Long.
  4. Press Summarize.
  5. Read the Summary, then use Copy summary or Save as text.

Two ways to summarize

When your browser has a built-in summarizer, as recent versions of Chrome on a computer do, this page asks it to write the summary. The model runs on your own device, so your text is not sent to any server. In other browsers, or when you turn on the option, the page picks the most important sentences from your text instead. It finds the sentences that share the most ideas with the rest of the text, gives a little extra weight to opening sentences, and skips repeats.

What it is good for

  • Getting the gist of a long article or report before you read it properly.
  • Turning meeting notes or a transcript into a few key points.
  • Checking that your own writing makes its main points clearly.
  • Writing a quick headline or subject line for a longer piece.

Tips for better summaries

  • Paste clean text. Menus, adverts and page footers copied along with an article make the result worse.
  • Use Key points for notes and reports, and Short summary for articles.
  • Choose Long if the first attempt leaves out something important.
  • Always check numbers, names and dates against the original. A summary is a guide, not a replacement for reading.

Privacy

Many summarizers send your text to a server, where it may be stored or used for training. This page never sends your text anywhere, whichever method it uses. That makes it safe for drafts, contracts, notes and anything else you would rather keep to yourself.

Questions

Why does it say the browser needs to download a model?

Chrome downloads its built-in model the first time a site asks for it. It is large, so the first summary can take a few minutes on a slow connection. After that it works offline. You can always turn on Only use sentences from my text to skip it.

How long can the text be?

Long texts are split into parts, summarized, and then combined. Very long documents work best with the sentence picker.

Can I summarize a PDF?

Copy the text out of the PDF and paste it in. For a long PDF, the text chunker can split it into parts first.

Will the summary invent things?

The sentence picker only uses sentences from your text, so it cannot add anything new. A built-in model writes new wording, so check important details against the original.

Where to next

Carry on with what you just made, still on your device.
